pposites attract. Beauty loved the Beast.

Anna loved the Beach Boys. I should

qualify that. California was definitely a

fantasy when I was a kid. I saw all the

beach party movies. Then, when I was thinking

about a surf collection, I went back and watched

them all again. They were horrible,

all cast with actors who were clos-

ing in on thirty. Even the sun looked

fake. Which fit perfectly with my

adult-onset appreciation of the

Gothic tinge to LA’s lotus-eating

mythology. The darker truths behind all that sun

and surf and blonde hair and white teeth appealed to

my twisted side. Besides, it was iconic, pop-cultural

stuff. Maybe that’s why Steven was into shooting my

surfer collection on Lisa Marie Presley. That name,

that style. Also, didn’t Elvis hang ten in his time?

Do you remember Michael Nader from

Dynasty? He lived on my block, and it turned out

he’d been one of the dancers in the beach party mov-

ies. (You have to wonder what the odds are, but

things like that happen to me all the time. I’m a cult

magnet!) When I re-watched them, you could see

they used the same people over and over again. And

the concept never changed: a tribe of surf-crazed

teens who couldn’t wait to get back

in the water, so that even when they

were in their party frocks, the girls

had their bathing suits on under-

neath. My storyboard for the col-

lection was wall-to-wall

That’s the way I styled my Spring 2004 collection.

I like a challenge. That’s where the weirdness

creeps in. In that surf collection, there were images

silkscreened on Lycra and covered in sequins.

Nobody could really tell what they were. They

were actually pictures of Steven, Linda, and Naomi,

about as far away from beach boys and girls as you

could get.
